Some mushrooms were poison; some weren＇t. She thought she knew, from science, what the most poison ones looked like. But there was one kind that mimicked a safe mushroom, and it could grow anywhere. She stood over three mushrooms growing near the sidewalk and examined them. They looked safe. They also looked like the ones that looked safe but weren＇t. The Margaret did something so strange she felt she was doing it in her sleep. She glanced around, saw no one, knelt quickly to the sidewalk, and put her nose to the tip of one of the mushrooms. She sniffed its dried-leaf scent. Then she very deliberately ran her tongue over its velvety surface. And she very deliberately took a delicate bit from its edge. And swallowed it. She stood up slowly. Slowly, she climbed back on her bike and began to pedal toward home. She held herself very straight, imagining the moon-like particle, tooth-marked, entering her stomach. Was she the same as before? Or was she on the edge of death? She tried to feel her body from the inside, tap it for clues. But her racing heart drowned out everything else. It could go either way. She might live to be a grandmother. She might collapse before she had travelled three more blocks. Through the long summer, she felt the slow growth of this runaway force inside her.
