Holly knew that the gun Morgan had shot himself with was still at the police station. She knew this firsthand, because Gene Rollison had told her late Friday afternoon, just two hours after Morgan＇s body had been found in the willows that grew along Black Creek. Gene had surprised her by coming to her house, asking if he could talk to her. She＇d been fixing dinner to take to Marvelle and Curtis. ＂Morgan was on his back, shot through the heart,＂ Gene had said, ＂ the way you＇d shoot a deer. Usually people shoot themselves in the head.＂ ＂Maybe people shoot themselves where they hurt most,＂ Holly had said. But Morgan＇s suicide hadn＇t seemed real to her yet; what was more surprising was that Gene Rollison, as used to death as he was, was sitting at her kitchen table, quietly crying. He hadn＇t known Morgan at all, but he and Marvelle had been seeing each other in secret. Holly wasn＇t sure for how long, or whether or not they＇d slept together. | ■茱蒂．特洛伊／Judy Troy The recipient of a 1996 whiting writers＇ award, JUDY TROY was born in northern Indiana. She has worked as a waitress, a salesclerk, and a bartender. She has taught writing at an alternative high school, at Indiana University, and at the University of Missouri, and she is now Alumni-Writer-in- Residence at Auburn University. Her collection of stories, Morning Doves, published in 1993, was nominated for a Los Angeles Times Book Award. She lives in Auburn, Alabama, with her husband, and her dog, Hardy. |
